Strata: an extraordinary career

The strata industry in NSW has long been a growth area for those who are savvy enough to recognise its opportunities.

Look around – with all the apartment buildings going up from Castle Hill to Caringbah and out to Camden the question you need to ask is ‘who is going to manage them all? The answer to that could be ‘you’.

Good strata managers are often “people-persons” with particular qualities that make them well-suited to the role. They need a level of empathy, compassion and patience when dealing with owners and tenants in the strata environment. Being a strata manager also means that there is never a dull moment, you are not tied down to a desk job and you are getting your ‘hands dirty’ with tasks that require you to think outside the box when it comes to solving a problem.

Strata managers are in contact with a variety of people; the young, elderly, developers and tradesmen, so they need the ability to communicate effectively. It’s also helpful to be a confident speaker when chairing regular meetings and be a capable negotiator and mediator in difficult circumstances. Strata managers have a varied role not only as a property manager, but also requiring the expertise of a lawyer, valuer, insurance broker and accountant to boot.

For those considering a career in the strata industry, the best advice is to do some research and make contact with those already in the sector. Be constantly on the lookout for upcoming courses to develop your skills. Events are also an opportunity to network with those in the industry to learn from their experience. Ask for their advice and they may even see you as a potential employee.
