Master of Urban Renewal and Housing at UNSW – Enrolling for 2016

The first Degree of its kind in Australia, UNSW’s new Urban Renewal and Housing Program aims to appeal to mid-career professionals as well as recent graduates. It will equip students to enter or progress in a range of employment fields, including housing and strata management – whether in State Government, not-for-profit, property industry or consultancy settings.

At the heart of the course are six mandatory taught modules:

  • Urban Renewal
  • Implementing Urban Regeneration Projects
  • Housing Policy and Finance
  • Housing Management and Markets
  • City Equity and Wellbeing
  • Engaging Communities

In addition, students will choose four ‘elective’ courses from a wide range of existing courses hosted elsewhere in the Built Environment faculty or in other faculties. These include, for example:

  • Strategic Urban Policy
  • Real Estate Economics and Public Policy
  • City Building: Infrastructure Planning

Importantly from the perspective of mid-career professional applicants, most of the mandatory courses will be taught in ‘intensive mode’; that is, in concentrated teaching blocks rather than spread through the semester on a traditional ‘weekly lecture’ basis. This should make it easier to slot in study alongside work.

While the full Masters Degree is a 1.5 year Program (if studied full time) there are options to study elements of the Masters Program in smaller packages. We are also offering Urban Renewal and Housing in Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma versions (roughly one third and two thirds of the full Masters Degree, respectively – both in terms of timescale and cost). In any event, it is anticipated that many or most students enrolling for URH will wish to study on a part time basis.
