What to do in a power outage

A recent power outage in Sydney’s northern suburbs caused by a wide storm is a reminder to be prepared. The power was out for thousands of households for a number of days making life next to impossible for lots of people.

Thanks to a story on ABC News, there are a few things you can do to prepare just in case you lose power:

  • put together an emergency kit with torches, fresh batteries and a first aid kit
  • ensure you have a supply of fresh water and non-perishable food
  • create a list of emergency numbers (keep a written copy in case you can’t access from phone or laptop)
  • buy a thermometer for your fridge so you can check if food needs to be tossed.

Never go near powerlines. While they may be broken they could still be live and lethal.

Be safe and have plans in place.
