New laws for NSW

If you’ve noticed some tired and stressed NSW members lately there is a reason. After almost five years of consultation, submissions and lobbying NSW finally has a new set of strata laws, including Regulations, which take effect from 30 November 2016.

NSW members are busy not just providing their usual high level service, but also familiarising themselves with the new laws, getting their owners up to speed and working through the implementation of new practices and procedures.

Members have also been attending educational roadshows that were jointly developed by SCA (NSW), NSW Fair Trading and REINSW. These have travelled to regional areas and been held in the Sydney CBD and will be offered throughout the next few months.

Changes that we’ve been highlighting to members include allowing tenant representation on the executive committee; the use of new technology to enable participation and voting at strata meetings; and a simpler process for dealing with disputes.

Owners corporations will have the opportunity to enact new by-laws which are more focused on modern apartment living. One exciting change for owners is that they will have the power to ask their local council to assist addressing parking issues. Many members from around the country will certainly be looking to NSW to see how this all works out.

We have lots of information on our website, as does NSW Fair Trading, about the new changes so please check it out.
