City of Sydney Council Welcomes Strata Owners

SCA (NSW) started a strata owners session as part of its annual convention around nine years ago which eventually turned into Strata Owners Day. Since then thousands of strata owners have benefitted from information and advice provided by our experts.

This years’ second ever standalone event held on 25 March was no exception and the address provided by City of Sydney Councillor, Jess Scully, highlighted the ever-increasing importance of strata in the community.

Councillor Scully highlighted that the 2017 event was being held in one of the most diverse cities in the world, home to over 200 nationalities. And that was just the start of some interesting facts and data about strata today, such as 75 percent of people in the Sydney local government area live in strata. And by 2030 there will be an additional 61,000 dwellings in the City of Sydney local government area, most of which will be strata-titled properties.

Recognising this, Councillor Scully said that City of Sydney aims to assist strata owners so that they have a good experience within their own communities.

This includes working with schemes to reduce their energy consumption. Regardless of individual thoughts on climate change, reducing energy consumption and saving water ends up as money in owners’ pockets and might just make for a healthier environment. With this in mind, City of Sydney is aiming to reduce the level of 2006 carbon emissions by 70 percent by 2030 and believes it will achieve these goals with the support of the strata community.

As a services and infrastructure provider, the council offers strata owners a number of opportunities such as its Strata Skills 101 workshops. These are free and aim to help strata owners build knowledge and strata literacy.

Another initiative is the City of Sydney Residential Apartment Sustainability Plan which contains details of how the City wishes to achieve better environmental performances from residential apartments.

Two other strata related programs City of Sydney is running are Smart Green Apartments, which sees council aiming to work with around 20 strata plans each year to develop efficiencies to reduce energy consumption. The other is the Green Square Strata Network. Please check out the City of Sydney website for more details about these and other initiatives.

SCA (NSW) would like to thank Mayor Clover Moore, Councillor Scully and City of Sydney for its ongoing work and support of the strata industry and contribution to Strata Owners Day.
